This kind of visual storytelling has been missing from digital advertising, but is what we’ve come to expect from the best TV ads. Tumblr makes that kind of brand experience finally possible online.

Brands like Coca-Cola, Adidas and Whole Foods are getting it right, because they treat their Tumblr presence as an extension of their brand, allowing them to communicate the essence of who they are, all while driving social amplification and high levels of engagement.

Forbes: Why 2013 Is The Year You Need To Get Serious About Tumblr

Yes, yes, and more yes!! This is exactly how I feel about Tumblr as well and one of several big reasons I was excited to join the company a little over six months ago. I really feel Tumblr is posed in a perfect position to revitalize and potentially revolutionize online advertising and enable brand marketers to actually tell their story and not just cram more IAB standardized banners or short text snippets down unwilling user’s throats. I was close friends with many on the storytelling team at Yahoo! (in fact I helped a long time friend get hired onto that team) and learned a ton about the pains brands go through. I am quite happy to see many of those concerns simply don’t exist for advertisers on Tumblr. This is definitely the way of the future and I am honored to be a part of it!

Yesterday afternoon, I had the distinct honor of being one of the few outsiders to tour the New York Aquarium and document the devastation caused there by Hurricane Sandy. Our amazing Tumblr editorial team took the photos and other content from my visit and wrote up an excellent piece, At the Coney Island Aquarium, Sea Life Goes On. I recommend you take a look! It was a real pleasure to see how well the animals were coping with the situation and to see the dedication of the staff (many of whom had their own homes destroyed by the storm) to preserving the lives of the 12,000+ animals who live there. As an avid diver and marine animal lover myself, the experience was bittersweet, but one I will remember for a long time. Please join me in donating to help repair the facility and ensure future generations are able to learn from the many exhibits there.
